Ellen C. Karnett Trust

Ellen C. Karnett established a trust to ensure the well-being, education, and training of children with intellectual disabilities. Her vision was to create a lasting impact on these children's lives within Douglas, Sarpy, and Pottawattamie counties. The trust was named in honor of Ellen's son, Richard, reflecting her deep commitment to supporting children with similar needs.

The Karnett Trust specifically funds 501©(3) nonprofit organizations operating within the specified counties, and the focus areas for funding include:

• Care: Providing essential services and support for daily living and health needs.
• Education: Enhancing learning opportunities and educational resources tailored to children with intellectual disabilities.
• Training: Offering vocational training and life skills programs to foster independence and personal growth.

Nonprofits who receive Karnett funds are reviewed and vetted by UWM's community investment review team volunteers. These individuals each bring a specific area of expertise, lived experience, an understanding of community needs and an equity lens to help UWM determine who receives funding while removing barriers and creating opportunities.
